It’s official! With our inaugural high-level roundtable yesterday we officially launched the European Decentralisation Institute.
In collaboration with our partner The Lisbon Council we convened senior policymakers, experts, and industry leaders from across Europe to discuss how decentralisation can turn sovereignty from ambition into capability.
Here are the 5 Key Takeaways:
1️⃣ The Sovereignty Gap – Europe’s rules still run on non-European rails. Sovereignty must be built into infrastructure, not just law.
2️⃣ Decentralisation as Design – Apply decentralisation where it enhances transparency, resilience, and accountability.
3️⃣ Operational Pathways – Four priorities for the next 36 months: the DDSA Act, an EU Digital Infrastructure Fund, governance-first regulation, and a “Total Cost of Centralisation” scorecard.
4️⃣ Bottom-Up Innovation – Civic networks, open protocols, and modular pilots will prove that decentralisation works.
5️⃣ Rebalance, Not Retreat – Europe’s autonomy depends on distributed governance and interoperable digital rails.
These takeaways and more will be published in our upcoming policy paper “Rebalancing Europe’s Digital Power: decentralisation as a practical route towards digital sovereignty”
Thank you to all participants for the lively discussion and thank you to the Ethereum Foundation for your support.
